How You Can Spice Up The Decor In Your Home

Who wouldn’t enjoy coming home to a well-decorated house? That feeling of seeing great interior design and decoration surrounding the place is just wonderful. You won’t just look forward to coming home every time you go out, but guests would love to visit your house, too! If you’ve been wanting to make your home more beautiful but don’t have a big budget for it, read on!

I’ll help you add zest to it in just a few simple steps.

How You Can Spice Up The Decor In Your Home

When decorating your home, I highly encourage you to identify at least one or a mix of distinct styles so that the design would be more personalized, and the interior more organized and consistent. Just imagine going for a neutral-colored theme, but purchasing a ton of loud-colored décor because you think they’re cute while in store. Most likely they’ll clash when you start putting them together. So before you start buying anything, make sure to define your style and consider the types of decor that would match the overall theme of your house.

That includes furniture, floors, appliances, architectural style, all the way to walls – decor and paint! You can go for classical, mid-century modern, industrial, art deco, coastal/cottage, Zen/Asian, contemporary, vintage/shabby chic, art noveau, rustic/country, and eclectic. You can also change the lighting and add some cool or warm home decor accordingly, as you wish. When choosing more than one style, make sure they complement each other so they won’t be clashing.

After you’ve chosen your theme, here are the things that you can do to spice up the décor in your home.

  • Don’t Be Afraid Of Patterns

See how patterns can make your home pop?

A simple chair can be made state-of-the-art and your dull walls can have life and glee by adding unique patterns to them. Just make sure that the pattern you’re going for matches your theme, especially in terms of color choice.

You can go for ikat, stripes, geometric, tropical, or polka dots. You can add an accent wall with patterned paintings or photographs. With patterns, you’re bringing sparkles into various areas of the house and saying goodbye to plain sight.

Overall, adding patterns will give any room a little more life—looking more amazing than ever before.

But in case you want something subtle at first, go with carved furniture in a neutral tone. Take for example our bed at the lake house as seen below. It’s a statement on its own with that carved wood, but in a white shade to keep it neutral.

  • Rearrange

Maybe you’re just tired of sitting in the same spot and watching tv in the corner. You might want to try to rearrange your furniture to give your home a fresh look.

You can interchange the position of your sofa and tv stand and see if it’ll make a great difference to your living room. I always do this. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I’m a serial furniture shuffler! This type of redecorating is free, giving your home a new perspective.

  • Add A Mirror

When your home is not that spacious and you want to escape the feeling of being pushed back into a small space, you can always add mirrors to create more depth.

Mirrors help give an illusion of having more space in your room. It’ll be more helpful if the mirror to be added is completely wide and floor-to-ceiling in height. It’s also great if it faces a window so light bounces off it, giving the illusion of a brighter and bigger room.

  • Pop of Color

If you’re too tired of the usual colors you see in your house, you might consider adding a pop of color. It doesn’t have to be a specific color for every piece of furniture, of course.

What you can do is add a touch of hue in your room along with other neutral colors. Let’s say, for example, you have a gray sofa. You can add blue and white throw pillows to give it a little pop. Or choose your favorite color that you’d love to see everyday.

Or better yet, create an accent wall and paint it something bright like this yellow!

  • Add Artwork

You can always create your artwork if you want, or purchase one from a painting or artwork shop. You’d be surprised about the many great finds you can come across when you visit a thrift store as well! Paintings and other forms of artwork, apart from their beauty, always do tell stories too, so having them is a great way to decorate your walls.

On the other hand, creating your own artwork or painting would be a fantastic idea if you’re inclined to arts and crafts. This will help you boost your creativity or unleash it if you haven’t realized your potential yet but would love to give it a try.

Along with this, it’ll give your home a personal touch and could be a conversation starter when you have guests around. You’ll surely appreciate the work you’ve accomplished once you display it in your home.

  • Ask Around

If you don’t have enough budget for furniture shopping or you just don’t want to spend a ton, ask around your friends or family members and tell them that you’re looking to acquire a piece of furniture or décor that they no longer use. You’d be surprised how many of them have some that are just sitting around, waiting to be thrown out. As they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

If they’re still in pretty good condition, or something you can freshen up, grab the opportunity and take it. Not only that you’ll be able to score yourself a good furniture piece, but you’ll be able to save a ton too!

  • Disguise What You Can’t Replace

Scratched sofa? Stained flooring? While it’s pricey to have them replaced, you can always disguise them and make them look like art or a rustic/abstract part of the overall design.

You can cover the sofa with a soft blanket and the stained floor with a decorative rug. If a side of your wall is broken, patch it with a work of art. Not only will you be able to add beauty to your home but you’ll also present any imperfections you want to conceal in a different manner. Of course, if you’re handy, you can also try to repair it yourself.

  • Declutter

When you’re trying to spice up your home, it’s always a great idea to do major decluttering.

You’ll discover how much air and brightness your room can still have as you feel it becoming more spacious through decluttering.

When decluttering, throw away any stuff that you haven’t used in two years. If you just saw your old stock of pots and suddenly decided that you’re going to use them, then do so immediately. Because if you don’t, they’ll only be taking up space in your home that could rather be a useful space.

After you’ve fully decided which ones you’re going to let go of, consider donating the useful stuff to charity or holding a garage sale. For some that are not functional but are still in good physical condition, you might want to seek repairman services and have them fixed or recycled.

If you’re living in the same spot for a couple of years and you’re just tired of how your home looks, then don’t be afraid to spice it up a little.

You can look for decor trends to get inspiration on how you want your house to be. There are a lot of things that you could do with your interiors and you shouldn’t be afraid of painting the house if it’ll bring joy to your home and you, as a homeowner.

It’s always a great idea to make your home more livable and pleasing to the eye. I know I get inspiration from my environment. Your surroundings can also boost your creativity especially now that a lot of people work from home.

Decorating your home should be fun as you make your home more personalized for yourself and your family. Let your home speak beauty for itself as you add great decors and interior to it. Happy decorating!
