Vogue Paris Celebrates Its 100th Anniversary With a Guy Bourdin Portrait

The moment we’ve been dreading for months is now upon us. The latest issue of Vogue Paris marks the last under Emmanuelle Alt. Since 2011, she has given us unapologetic fashion and glamour. Alt even navigated the height of the pandemic with ease.

She’s ending her tenure by celebrating the French fashion bible’s monumental 100th anniversary, which is a year late as a result of the pandemic. To mark the historic occasion, Alt reflects back on the magazine’s rich history by selecting an image from the archives for the front cover. The collectible October 2021 issue is adorned with a portrait by legendary photographer Guy Bourdin originally published in its April 1979 edition.

The cover proved to be bittersweet for our forum members. “The cover is perfect to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Vogue Paris. Shame that Emmanuelle is leaving, she was the best EIC of the magazine,” shared VogueGirl8910.

“This is not the cover I was expecting, but I love it.

Alt was great and wonderful and paying this kind of homage to the great Guy Bourdin is very fitting and oh so French,” noted mepps.

“Bourdin is a Vogue Paris legend so even a reprint makes sense to me,” approved dfl-001.

“On one hand, I’m kinda disappointed there’s no plethora of covers with a handful of Alt’s favorite models photographed by the likes of Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin or Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, but the use of Guy Bourdin’s print from 1979 feels appropriate and certainly feels celebratory with the gold foil,” voiced vogue28.

Although not everyone felt the same way. “I love Bourdin and appreciate this nod to his legacy, but let’s be honest, this is so lazy,” critiqued Fiercification.

“This kind of quality as Alt’s finale? Seriously?” asked balmain1914.

“Lazy, but I don’t hate it…probably because I know the worse is yet to come and I like the thought of Guy Bourdin getting such an important cover, he’s synonymous with Vogue Paris and I can’t imagine a better way to acknowledge his legacy,” commented YohjiAddict.
