When it comes to greetings cards, it really does work both ways. I love sending cards to the friends I don’t see very often, to mark special occasions or just to say a quick hello – and I’m always chuffed to receive a thank you note through the post. Even more so now that we are constantly wired. Because I spend so many hours looking at a screen, I prefer keep a proper diary rather than a digital version, and still read actual books and newspapers.

Retaining some analogue rituals, instead of doing everything online, can be good for you.

To me, thank you cards are a sign of good manners. After receiving Christmas and birthday gifts, my friend’s young daughters always send a thoughtful hand-written note; I save these up, together with my favourite greetings cards and place them in a pile behind a small vintage vase on the kitchen shelf; or arrange the posher ones on our picture ledge in the hallway. It takes time to choose the right card, to write a message (even though my handwriting is wobbly, these days) and then pop it in the post (more analogue action) and often these missives will be kept for a very long time. And this is why my latest collaboration with Charlotte Day the designer from Dandy Star is a selection of greetings cards.

Most have an age-positive message and can be used for birthdays, thank you notes or simply sent to cheer up an old friend.
