Styling your way out of lockdown – and the importance of rituals

This week in lockdown… I have given Mr That’s Not My Age a half-decent haircut (with a pair of Boots’ cheapest Salon Performance scissors) and whisper it am now contemplating a DIY trim. April 12 feels like a long way away, and my hair is getting longer and longer. Listening to the wonderful Sophia Loren on Desert Island Discs was an absolute treat. Still working after 70-years, the Oscar-winning actor discussed her career, family, growing-up in Italy after the Second World War and her latest film The Life Ahead. Oh and 86-year-old Loren picks the best luxury item to take with her to the desert island, ever.

More joyful moments this week: watching Pamela Adlon, Celia Imrie and co. dance to Christine & the Queen’s Tilted in the last episode of Better Things, season two. And the return of Grayson’s Art Club.

In other news, there has there has been a shift away from Duvet Coats to outstanding jackets; the pink corduroy Weekend MaxMara has re-emerged and another go-to favourite the upcycled camo bomber from The R Collective has seen a fair bit of action, too (below). To shake things up, the stompy boots have, on occasion, been sidelined and I’ve even walked out in this low-heel, 1970s-inspired boot from Ops& Ops. Not for the daily constitutional, mind. Just around the corner for a takeaway coffee, a newspaper or a bunch of flowers. Keeping up with daily and weekly rituals (no matter how small) has felt more important than ever during Lockdown Limbo, and has has given me a comforting sense of being moored. According to anthropologists, ‘ people across cultures tend to perform more rituals in times of uncertainty’ and it’s an ‘efficient way of relieving anxiety.’ This week’s long-awaited end-of-lockdown plan has helped, too.

And, I am optimistic that when the world reopens we are going to dress to express ourselves more than ever before. Trend forecasters have predicted a ‘Post Covid boom‘ that will bring with it a roaring 20s sense of escapism and optimism. While I can’t imagine we’ll all be buying embellished flapper dresses and partywear, I do think the way we dress will be informed by a new sense of freedom. I cannot wait to be standing in front of my wardrobe, with places to go and people to see, pondering what earrings to add, whether to cuff the sleeves and which footwear I’ll be striding out in.

More ways to style your way out of lockdown, below. Enjoy the weekend, I’ll be watching the Sophia Loren film…
