Powder Room / Bathroom Renovation

170

Today, I’m sharing our powder room renovation in the new house! It’s been awhile since I updated the blog with our home projects. So it’s about dang time! But if you want real-time updates, make sure you follow me on Instagram or Facebook where I post our current projects! I’ll make sure to update the blog with the other rooms we’ve tackled too. But today, let’s get to the powder room!

Disclosure: This powder room makeover is in collaboration with Love vs. Design. They make amazing custom color wallpaper to match your home’s theme and aesthetic!

Powder Room – Before

The photo above was when we bought the house. This powder room had a dated sink, mirror, light fixture and valance that looked from the 90s or 2000s. The top of the sink was cut on the left edge (not shown) which meant it was just forced there to fit the space… or perhaps was measured incorrectly, so they just trimmed it to fit the water fittings/pipes inside. I thought about just painting this sink. But I really wanted a console vanity for a powder room! So off this went along with the mirror, light, and wide flat curtain rod.

The only two things that stayed were the toilet (since it’s newer and had the dual flush that I replaced with a matte black flush button), and the floor! I’m not a fan of the ceramic tile made to look like slate. It were real slate, I’d be happy. But on the other hand, it wasn’t that bad to make us spend more time, effort and $$$ replacing it. So we kept it!

Powder Room – After

Isn’t she gorgeous?

Black console vanity sink

I’ve always wanted a console vanity/sink. But I knew I wanted it with a modern touch to match the rest of the updates I’m doing in the house. So I went with this simple, sleek, modern console sink. And of course, it had to be dramatic! So black it is!

Obviously, we had to get black drain pipes to go with it!

But of course, the star of the show is…

Outlined Peonies Wallpaper by Love vs Design

… this wallpaper! I’m in love! It was hard to pick a print from the many gorgeous wallpaper designs that Love vs Design has. But in the end, I was looking for moody, dramatic, and something that will go well with my black console sink. Initially I thought it would be too dark. But with a white ceiling (another gorgeous detail I shared here), it was the perfect pick!

You can get the outlined peonies wallpaper here. You can customize the colors to make sure they match the room really well! Shipping was fast and the wallpaper was packaged well. The quality is superb – it is peel and stick. So no need to apply paste! Came with easy instructions and a smoothing tool to help you with the process.

I did this all by myself! Overall, it was easy. But I soon found out that the walls in this powder room had curves here and there, making it tricky to line up all the flowers/pattern. In the end, I did the whole room in (less than) a day. Not gonna lie, I was sweating and scared to mess up. But here we are. I did it and I know you can do this too!

She’s a beaut! It’s giving me Parisian vibes with that decorative ceiling. So I just had to get this French “Toilette” bathroom door sign!

Light Fixture

If you were following along in my stories, you knew that the exhaust fan hole is off-centered in the room. There was a whole poll thing on Instagram and Facebook. But in the end, I MacGyver’d the whole thing and DIY’d a drum lamp shade to make it look centered in the room!

There is an exhaust fan on top of that drum lamp shade. I hung the shade leaving an opening on top for air to flow. Going to share a video/reels soon. So make sure to follow me on IG/FB for the tutorial!

Finally, one last detail that you may have noticed – what is that window treatment???

Window Treatment

I contemplated on curtains. But it’s a powder room. It’s a small room! Plus, the window is next to the toilet. So I knew I wanna go with shades – roller shades to be exact. I was already getting some kind of white fabric roller shades. But somehow, it felt off to me. I feel like it’s going to break the black and gold wallpaper too much. I wanted something that will blend in. And then I saw the zebra shades in BLACK! If you’re not familiar, here it is…

Zebra shades, stripes shades

The fabric print is basically stripes – black and a clear mesh. And as you roll, you can either have some light peeking through the window, or make it totally black out – perfect for a powder room or bathroom!

And yes, I totally painted that window black and the trim surround in white! I love it so much. No more orange wood, friends!

Total Renovation Cost and Resources

As always, I like to share the total cost of our renovation to give you an idea. For me it’s always helpful to see a breakdown of cost to help me prepare/save/budget for a future project. I remember when I was doing research about backyard fencing prices for our Pittsburgh home, I couldn’t find much information online. I know there are a lot of factors like styles, material, sizes, length, etc. But I just wanted to read about someone’s experience, so we can get an idea as far as budget goes. I don’t wanna go in blind thinking, maybe saving $3,000 is enough. And then what do you know… it’s actually closer to $10k!

So anyways, I’ve listed everything we used and spent, down to the last dollar. All resources/links are also listed below. So if you saw something in our powder room that you like, get to clicking!

Timeline and Task Assignments

Of course, it wouldn’t be that price if we hired someone to do it. We did everything ourselves. Thus, no labor fees! But there were no demos involved especially since we kept the floors, making it a fairly easy bathroom renovation!

It was mostly me that worked on this powder room a few hours a day and the husband would help during his free time. I did all the painting, caulking, spackling, ceiling, wall paper installation, baseboard, design, and hanging all the decorative touches. The husband did the sink replacement, plumbing, electrical, crown moulding, and hung the zebra blinds. Overall, we probably spent about 2-3 days total to finish this room, given there were a lot of wait times for paint drying!
