Choosing a word for the year can be a wonderful way to set intentions and focus on an area of your life. We don’t have to have a word for the year, but I like the idea of focusing on one.
As I prayed about my word this year, John 15:4 came to my mind. Remain in me, as I also remain in you (NIV). I also love how the Message version says it: Live in me. Make your home in me just as I do in you.
My word for the year is ABIDE. The dictionary defines abide as to bear patiently, to endure without yielding.
In scripture, the Greek word for abide is menó, meaning to stay, abide, or remain.
At this season of my life, I want to abide, remain faithful, and finish well. Our world may be getting farther and farther from Jesus, but I will continue to believe and trust that Jesus is everything I need.
Scripture talks a lot about being abiding. Here are a few of those scriptures:
- And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. 1 John 2:28
- Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us. 1 John 3:24
- If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. John 15:10
