Discovering the 30-Day Minimalism Challenge is the most freeing thing you can do for yourself, and it gives you a chance to declutter hundreds of items in the space of a month.

Plus, you don’t need to stop there. You can participate in the 30-Day Minimalism Challenge anytime you want. I like to do this whenever I feel things are becoming cluttered or at the beginning of each season.

Why The 30-Day Minimalism Challenge Works

I like to think of the 30-Day Minimalism Challenge as a game and, yes, a challenge. Although this never-ending decluttering journey never seems to end for me, I find that my space is becoming increasingly organized with each passing month.

After my husband passed away, I knew my home needed a refresh, and cleaning is very cathartic for me.

I discovered that making sure my home stayed clean was not enough. Moreover, I felt a deep need to get rid of things I had outgrown, had no affinity for, or no longer wanted, which became a top priority for me.

Furthermore, this challenge sparked a fire within me to make sure I finished and felt proud afterwards. For those unfamiliar with it, the 30-Day Minimalism Challenge helps you minimize your possessions, regardless of their nature.

The idea is to eliminate one thing on day one, two on the second day, three on the third day, and so on. By the end of 30 days, if you follow it faithfully, you will see incredible results.

For example, you can eliminate 465 things at the end of the month.

The Rules of the Game

So, there are a few rules you need to adhere to when playing the 30-Day Minimalism Challenge. Let’s set the tone for this challenge so you know what to expect.

  1. General trash doesn’t count.
  2. You can’t count items like toothpicks, hair clips, or anything similar that is tiny.
  3. You need to ensure that you remove the items every day, whether you donate, sell, or discard them.
  4. If you play with a family member or friends, set clear rules and ensure everyone follows them.
  5. You can choose a prize for each winner at the end of the 30 days. Choose something fun, like a dinner night out on the town. If you play by yourself, treat yourself to a spa day or something on your Amazon wish list!

Sell Stuff On The Net

While you are doing this challenge, why not place some items for sale on the internet?

You can use places like Facebook Marketplace. Usually, I place items on their monthly and have great success selling them. This 30-Day Minimalism Challenge inspired me to lower some prices to move things along more quickly.

Try Not To Lollygag when Decluttering

Decluttering doesn’t need to become an event, and if you can make decisions fast! If I have to think about an item for more than a few minutes, I probably didn’t want it in the first place.

Of course, you can find numerous decluttering methods on the internet, but I prefer this one the best.

For example, my makeup brushes were past the point of cleaning, so I tossed the ones I never use. The same goes for expired cosmetics. You know those makeup samples you have lying around? Well, maybe they need tossing.

In just one day, you can declutter a ton of items by easily cleaning out your expired skincare, old makeup, and tools.

The Emotional Effects Of Decluttering

Let’s face it.

It’s not easy to declutter and can have some emotional cost. Please don’t fret, instead, read this article I wrote about how to declutter and let things go without the stress.

Many of us develop emotional attachments to our “things,” and before we know it, our homes are in disarray, and so are our lives. If you ever watch the TV series Hoarders, you get a good idea of what it’s like to attach yourself to your possessions.

While your life might not look exactly like that, where your home becomes overrun by stuff, it’s easy to understand how it can happen. If you prep yourself mentally, you can breeze through this Minimalism Challenge stress-free.

Start The Minimalism Challenge Today

The term minimalism has become very popular over the past few years, and for good reason.

First, it doesn’t mean you need to get rid of everything in your home. We love our home decor and the personal items that hold meaning for us. Instead, look to eliminate the clutter.

For instance, do you need all those shoes in your closet? Do you even wear them all?

How about our handbags and wallets? Again, if I haven’t worn either of them in a year, it’s time to toss them. And by tossing, donating, selling, or giving them to friends and family.

With tempting ads all over the internet, especially on social media, we are always in a shopping frenzy. These ads know exactly what you want by using sophisticated algorithms and can cause us to shop when we don’t have the cash or when we don’t need them.

Moreover, it’s perfectly okay to treat ourselves to new things; you can try the ‘buy one, toss one’ principle.

Every time I buy something new, I try to eliminate one thing at the same time.

For example, I LOVE these Minnetonka Women’s Slippers and whenever I buy a new pair, I make sure to toss the old ones. Some people keep the worn-out old pair around “just in case” they might need them. I ask, why do that? Just toss them!

Department stores sell them for twice the price than Amazon, so whenever I need a new pair, it doesn’t strain my wallet to replace them.

So, why not start this challenge today? Either way, and whatever works for you, this Minimalism Challenge will surely help you organize your life, your home, and your mental health, too!
