Decluttering Tasks

Sharing is Caring!

At some point, we all need to schedule decluttering tasks to keep our homes neat, tidy, and organized. Typically, we do these tasks on weekends or during vacation breaks from work. Sometimes, we miss these opportunities, and our homes become filled with things we either don’t want, need or have room for.

So, that’s why I created this scenario where I block out time for decluttering tasks that help relieve stress and uplift my mood. Bear with me; not everyone experiences this when cleaning or decluttering, and I do. So, these tips are for those who experience stress relief and a mood boost when performing these decluttering tasks.

Below, you’ll discover some ideas on organizing and clearing out some of the rooms in your home that you always meant to get to but didn’t.

Decluttering Tasks – Get Your Vibe On

When you have a block of time open, even on the fly, don’t sit there and do nothing. Rather, schedule that hour to do something productive. Force yourself to feel motivated if you need to.

First, grab your favorite playlist and schedule at least an hour’s worth of your favorite tunes. Typically, music is a great motivator. That’s why we listen to it when we exercise, go for a run or walk, and, yes, clean our homes.

For example, Charles Sturt University reported that our brain releases dopamine when listening to music. Dopamine is one of the feel-good hormones. It works to release this hormone specifically for goal-oriented behaviors. Additionally, it helps stimulate the section of your brain controlling motivation.

1 – Clean Up The Mess On Your Floors

When we are in a hurry, we tend to throw things on the floor with the intention of picking them up later. Later rarely comes, and with that, we have clothes strewn all over, shoes everywhere but in our closets, and dirty laundry in the mix of it all.

Yes, there are times when you will open packages and leave them on the floor to put them away later. Before you know it, you barely have time to move around. Add this chore to your decluttering tasks first, and watch how doing it will help relieve stress and uplift your mood.

1 – Start with one room at a time. Focus on clearing the floors of all items.

2 – Don’t throw them anywhere. Ensure you place them back where you had them stowed away.

3 – If you have time, go through your closet and decide which clothes you don’t or haven’t worn in ages. Ideally, this can go quickly if you don’t think about each piece too much. For me, it took about 15 minutes to donate several pieces.

4—Put unwanted items in a donate box and stow them away in your car. This will ensure you bring the item to your donation center and do not leave it lying around.

After you complete this task, you’ll receive that dopamine hit and feel satisfaction knowing you spent that hour being productive.

2 – Finally, Throw Away Broken or Missing Parts And Organize Makeup

Every week, I make a point of going through my garage and even drawers to find broken or missing parts. For example, broken plastic hangers, old batteries, loose screws, old cords, and even old bottles of nail polish are on the list for disposal.

Next, I go through my beauty products and look for things like missing caps, dried-out lipsticks, eyeshadows, etc. It’s surprising how much “stuff” needs to go that takes up space and creates clutter.

Additionally, throw out expired and empty makeup and organize your makeup drawer. Add this to your decluttering tasks and feel the liberation!

3 – Conceal Visual Clutter

Concealing visual clutter can help relieve stress, enabling you to feel organized. Every week or so, I scope each room for signs of visual clutter and tackle one thing at a time.

For example, when I enter a room, I inventory what looks out of place and needs organizing. One instance was when my perfume bottles sat on top of my dresser and quickly gathered dust. Even though I had them on a perfume tray, they continued to look out of sorts and messy.

To solve this, I cleared out a drawer in my dresser and made room for my perfume bottles. I removed things like old eyeglass cases and hair ties and placed my perfume there instead.

By doing so, I concealed visual clutter and prevented my perfume from gathering dust simultaneously. The goal is to make a habit of keeping unsightly items tucked away, not on display.

Of course, you can do this by concealing and organizing tech cords and other items that seem messy and stand out like a sore thumb. After I complete a task, I notice my mood feels uplifted and de-stressed.

Favorite Decluttering Tip: I love buying decorative baskets to help me stay organized. You can use them in every room of your home; they look chic and help you stay organized. These small wicker baskets are my favorite for the bathroom.

4 – Shop Your Space Before Hitting The Stores

It might seem odd to hear shop your own home first before hitting the mall, but it might save you lots of money if you do. For example, I needed some new socks, specifically white crew socks. My first instinct was to run out and buy new ones, and then I stopped and said, let me check first.

Surprisingly, I found several new pairs in the back of my sock drawer that went unnoticed. In this case, I “shopped my space” and saved time and money.

Also, look for items you can repurpose. It might surprise you if you take the time to clear some drawers before heading to the store. I often throw things in a cabinet or drawer and forget about them. Besides, it’s a great way to de-stress and feel a sense of accomplishment when you find things with tags on them you never used or opened.

5 – Stop Saying Yes To Freebies and Special Offers – Life-Changing Decluttering Tasks

You are not alone if you can’t help yourself when offered free goods or special offers. Often, these freebies end up creating clutter and create stress.

I always ask myself, do I love it, do I need it? Or am I just excited because it’s free? After this self-check, I always feel a sense of freedom, as if I have accomplished something. This is one of my favorite decluttering tasks.

Just because something is free doesn’t mean I need to own it. Conversely, just because there’s a special offer or sale doesn’t mean I have to have it.

Doing a check-in like this helps boost my mood and instantly de-stresses me.

Decluttering Task Complete!

I hope these decluttering tasks help you de-stress and boost your mood. To help even further, I wrote them down in Post-it notes and placed a few around to help keep me in check.

Tell me in the comments what helps you de-stress and boost your mood. I would love to hear about them.
