The Fashion Week Fandango has been and gone for another year. I didn’t attend any of the shows or events this time – though I did manage a short trip to Paris in September which was an absolute delight. So good to be back in one of my favourite cities after all this time and so easy to travel there by train, in spite of the extra paperwork. With the Covid-19 restrictions in place, France feels much safer and more organised than England. Everyone is masked-up on public transport and in shops and other indoor spaces. It was quite shocking to come back and see the free-for-all with fresh eyes. Anyhow, that’s another feature…I still haven’t caught up with the fashion show coverage. After what we’ve been through with Covid, and what we’re facing in terms of climate change, I have to admit that the SS22 shows aren’t the first thing on my mind.
Putting on big presentations and having guests fly in from around the globe is not eco-friendly by any stretch of the imagination, no matter how many trees are planted and how much carbon is off-set. Many of us are being more considerate about what we buy, not chasing the latest trends and consuming like crazy, but choosing timeless pieces and vintage, instead. It’s good to see the fashion world back in action, though I’d much rather further develop my own sense of style and create outfits from the clothes I already own.
Fashion is a hugely important industry and a large employer of women and I’m not writing it off. Just querying the whole fashion show circus. I enjoyed the way designers and brands pivoted during lockdown and came up with creative ideas to present their new collections, online. And there are other interesting initiatives like Wool Week, Second-Hand September and London Craft Week to encourage us to be more mindful about what we wear and where we buy it. I love clothes and still buy them, I’m just being careful about where I put my money.
Vintage is best worn blended with modern pieces. Choose one standout item, like this stunning tweed jacket, and add contemporary wardrobe basics for a timeless look.
STYLE NOTES: Vintage tweed jacket was loaned from Menage Modern Vintage. I bought the barrel leg jeans from Cos, a couple of years ago (still available HERE). The t-shirt is old Theory and jersey cardigan is an old American Vintage menswear style that Mr TNMA no longer wanted, so I nabbed it. My leather tote is ancient Ally Capellino.
