What we used to call thermal underwear, we now call HEATTECH. Like the term Hoover used as a generic phrase to describe all vacuum cleaners in the 1970s, today HEATTECH has become synonymous with garments formerly known as ‘thermals’. At this time of year, I prefer to wear lighter layers and Uniqlo’s thermal clothing is great for providing extra warmth without the bulk (and the fear of a full-on Flush Fest). And, it’s not just underwear and T-shirts; pleated trousers, pile-lined joggers, denim leggings and brilliant bra tops, are available in innovative fabrics, too.

In our local park on a bitterly cold day, the heat-retaining properties were put to the test.

While Sarah the photographer bundled herself up in a big coat and scarf, I honestly felt completely cosy in my Extra Warm Cotton Crew Neck T-shirt. This is a heavier jersey knit than the finer Heat-Tech I once wore layered-up in the Arctic Circle, and it makes an excellent base layer. Perfect under a corduroy blazer, lightweight coat or knitted cashmere tank, and available in a range of chic colours.

And, yes I am still carrying the Mini Shoulder Bag (now available in CORDUROY), I like how it matches my new Heat Tech Lined Padded Scarf. Hashtag, winning at autumn.
