For a while now I’ve been on the look-out for a classic, single-breasted tweed coat. Not a car coat that ends mid-thigh and allows an icy breeze around the knees – why are there are so many of these around? (Less fabric, cheaper to make?) But something similar to the second-hand men’s coat I wore as a post-punk-loving teenager. The one that got nicked from a party and meant I had to walk home minus outerwear on a freezing cold night.

Knee-length. Retro. Classic.

And then, heading across town on New Year’s Eve, I popped into the APC store in Covent Garden, not really intending to buy anything. And, lo.

There in the sale, the ideal, vintage-inspired, tweed coat. With a slightly loose silhouette and moody-Northern-band vibes (Joy Division/ Bunnymen soundtrack here), it was the perfect match for my jumbo cords and trainers. Half price. Done deal.

And that’s the way to whoop up a classic coat.

Go for traditional with a contemporary twist. Introduce snazzy sneakers, a natty scarf and more colour than the monochrome, post-punk era could cope with. There’s a trend described as Elevated Indie – and I’m here for it. Spare us the car coat…
