Halloween is just around the corner. And if you still need to find a last-minute Halloween costume, I got you! I’m sharing a Pretty Skull costume that you can recreate with *hopefully* pieces from your own closet AND home. And second, I recreated a Monster High doll costume that I did years ago.
But this time, with more wearable pieces that you can find in your closet. Seeing the trend here? Yup, the goal is to create a last-minute Halloween costume with items you probably already own. Let’s get to it!
Two Last-Minute Halloween Costumes
Pretty Skull Costume
While this costume is widely known as Dia de los Muertos, which translates to Day of the Dead – the Mexican holiday, let’s just refer to it as a pretty skull costume to avoid any cultural appropriation.
I myself used to call it the latter, but recently have read some things here and there. So if you are a Mexican or identify as LatinX, and you find this offensive, I apologize. As a Filipina who grew up with a mix of Chinese and Spanish influences (in both culture and race), we celebrate the Day of the Dead. We call it “Undas”, derived from the Spanish word “honra” meaning respect – respect for the dead.
We go to the cemetery, bring flowers and light candles for our dead. We bring food there and enjoy a feast after saying our prayers, and then leave.
So let’s get back to the costume! The costume includes a crown of flowers like roses, a long black dress with bold accents like flowers, stripes, and/or skeleton bones.
For the dress, find any long, black dress you have in your closet. Bonus points if you find something that has bold prints like red flowers and stripes.
Ruffles, off-the-shoulder, or something voluminous in the skirt are perfect styles.
For the crown, grab a headband and find faux flowers you might already have in your home. I have these fake peonies I use in vases around the house and they worked perfectly. Here’s a recent video I posted on my Facebook that will show you how I assembled it. If it doesn’t show up, just click “Watch on Facebook”.
And finally, the pretty skull makeup…Pretty Skull Makeup
Recreating the makeup is actually easier than it looks.
And while there are more elaborate designs that you can do, the simplest route would be to create flower/scalloped eyes, black triangle on the tip of the nose to give the illusion of no nose in a skull, and the lines on the mouth. I only used 3 things here:
- Lighter foundation/powder – I used my own foundation and heavily layered with a light setting powder all over my face.
- Black eyeshadow or liner – I used a black eyeshadow from my UD Naked 2 palette so I didn’t have to worry about removing eye liner on my entire face. This is what I used to draw the circle around my eyes, nose, and lines on my mouth.
- Deep red eyeliner – you can use whatever color you want like deep red, burgundy, deep violet, or even shades of blue. I went with an eyeliner for this part to make it easier to draw scallops around the circle around my eyes.
That’s it!
If you have more time, you can draw swirls on the forehead, chin and cheeks. I went simple and used my headband with a face net, and stuck a spider there!

Another easy Halloween costume to do is a Monster High doll! These dolls are a mix of vampires, werewolves, sea monsters and more. So you can choose a doll you like or has an outfit that you can recreate with pieces you already have in your closet.
Let me share mine.
I chose Draculaura because I can easily recreate the face makeup:
- Pink heart just below one of the eyes – used a Lancome lip liner (outlined with the UD liner from the other makeup look above)
- Pink lipstick with fangs – used the same Lancome lip liner and added fangs by drawing two triangle shapes on my lower lip with white eyeliner and outlined with a black eyeliner to define the fangs better
- Overly drawn lashes – create fake lashes with an eye liner or in this case, I used the gel liner included in the Ardell magnetic lashes that I’m wearing here. Okay first off, they’re not showing here as much because the overly drawn lashes are taking the spotlight. I also chose a natural lash look. BUT I do love them so much.
For someone who doesn’t have long, voluminous lashes, these are great. They aren’t over the top which make them look so natural on me. And as for the magnetic part, it’s genius. It’s the easiest way to wear fake lashes for me.
And trust me when I say I wore this from mid afternoon ’til late night! I was already wearing my makeup while cooking for our mini Halloween party. It stayed on! I am impressed and confused why it got a lot of bad reviews on Target’s site.
Either I got a fresh gel or they got a dried up one.
- Wig – the Draculaura doll has a brighter pink hair mixed in with black. But it’s okay, whether a whole head of pink hair or strands of pink you can attach to your hair, it’s all about the overall look! I also finished off with a cat headband just because I like it with the outfit. Haha!
Monster High Doll Draculaura Inspired Outfit
- For the outfit, anything pink and black will work.
Choose mini dresses or skirts with turtlenecks or button downs and a vest – perfect because they’re trending right now. So you can wear it as a costume and then wear later with sweaters and button downs!
- Layer with a moto jacket or faux leather jacket for a punk look that’s common with the Monster High dolls.
- For shoes, wear OTK or tall boots. You can also opt for combat boots that are hot right now! Dr.
Martens are also great!
- And if you have fishnet stockings or old tights that have already ripped, they would go so well with the overall theme!
What I’m wearing:
- Pink dress from last year, from Lane 51 Btq
- Faux leather jacket from Target clearance last year
- Tall boots c/o Vionic Shoes
Other Last-Minute Halloween Costume Ideas
- Minions or Agnes in Despicable Me movies – you’ll need a yellow sweater or long sleeved shirt, yellow beanie, and denim overalls. You’ll also need goggles or round glasses that you can exaggerate with cardboard or paper to make it look bigger, OR just draw the goggles around your eyes using makeup. If doing Agnes, the little kid, you just need to tie your hair up with a red hair tie. She’s also wearing denim overalls, white sneakers and a striped yellow shirt.
Would be great if you have a unicorn stuffed toy like Agnes carries in the movie. Or if you have a pup with a unicorn costume, that would be perfect. I almost ended up as Agnes since the Husband wore a Minion costume. But I couldn’t find a yellow shirt that works and really wanted to wear my pink wig.
Haha!
- Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland – my other option was this but I couldn’t find a pink striped top! I think I donated my only one. But if you have one, that’s basically all you need and makeup! Just look at this Pinterest board for makeup ideas.
It’s basically a cat makeup, whiskers and all, but use pink colors and exaggerated mouth/teeth!
- Cruella – with the recent movie starring Emma Stone, wouldn’t it be fun to portray the younger Cruella? An all-black, sleek and fashionable outfit is all you need. If you have a cape or similar coat, or maybe a chic structured blazer in black, just add some sexy gloves, faux leather skirt, tight pants or leggings. But the important thing to do is the hair – half platinum/light blonde, half black.
I hope you’re saving your old costume wigs. Sometimes they come in handy for these things! If you have a cheap light blonde/platinum/white wig, you can paint half of it in black. If you have black, spray paint the other half in either white or light cream.
- Kim Kardashian Met Gala 2021 – this is pretty easy to recreate because it’s an all black outfit!
Wear a T-shirt dress that you can cinch with a black belt or tie to make it fit on the body. You can also just opt for any fit or structured mini dress. Wear black tights and pointed shoes. Wear long black gloves – important thing is that no skin is showing.
If you don’t have long gloves, wear tights as gloves instead! You can also wear short gloves under a long sleeved turtleneck. Wear black tights over your head and tie in the back. Make sure to pull your hair up into a sleek pony!
And when all else fails, there’s always the witch, zombie or vampire that you can do with almost any black outfit you already own.
Add a cape or hood with maybe an apple or broomstick for the witch, pale makeup for the zombie, and fangs with blood (red liquid lipstick or eyeliner) dripping on the side of your mouth for the vampire. Enjoy!
