Matching Christmas Pajamas Without Totally Matching

There’s no better time to wear matching Christmas pajamas than this 2020 Holiday season! Pandemic. Lockdown. Quarantine.

Nowhere to go. And everyone’s wearing loungewear most days! A lot decorated earlier than usual. Some went crazy with their holiday decorations just to bring some #ChristmasCheer into their homes!

So matching PJs for the whole family sounds totally normal in 2020. But that doesn’t mean you have to buy the whole family the same PJs. I mean, of course you can. I’ve done it in the past – somewhat done it this year.

But if the significant other is a little snob , or there’s no budget this year for a set , you can still match without buying totally matching pajamas. So below, I’m sharing some ideas for matching Christmas PJs – whether you want to buy a full on set or use whatever you have in your closet and just add a little something to it!

Our first-ever matching PJs was in 2016. We went on a road trip to Philly to celebrate my Christmas birthday there. It was just myself, my husband and our fur baby, Louis.

Since I know there won’t be any Christmas tree or decorations when we wake up Christmas morning in the hotel room, I thought we could wear matching Christmas PJs instead. Ya know, to get that holiday decor/spirit in there! We wore the same holiday PJs the following year (2017), to celebrate our newly purchased home in Pittsburgh just a few days before Christmas. These PJs are from Lazy One, and what I like about this set is that the women’s PJs are leggings but the men’s is just a regular, loose pajamas – to keep the husband comfortable!

So yeah, he’s still in his comfort zone.

But the print matches mine and Louis’ PJs. I’ve since added another one for little Chloe. In 2018, I went with a lumberjack, red and black and black/white gingham Christmas theme. And so I got these matching red and black check PJs from Lazy One that year.

I love this set because the women’s one is a sleep shirt.

So I can wear it as is, with leggings, or with joggers depending on how cold it is. For the men’s – it was just the pajama bottoms. So the husband can use whatever top he wants with it. He usually just wears it with a black or white long-sleeved shirt.

And then of course, the doggies have their onesies! So cute!

Now the great thing about Christmas prints is that you can find them everywhere! Different brands will usually carry the same or similar Christmas print. So it’s easy to find matching ones this time of year.

For this year, 2020, these are the pajamas that we are going to be wearing on Christmas morning at the lake house…

Our 2020 Christmas Pajamas

They aren’t matching at all. They’re not a set. But looking at them all together, you can totally see that there is a theme – black and white in either check or tartan pattern! Since I went with a black and white check/gingham theme with my Christmas tree at the lake house, I thought it would be fun to match it as well.

I got my PJs from Lane 51 Boutique. The cardigan is old, from Madewell, and is just there as back-up if I get cold.

And then I realized, I got the husband an almost similar print pajama bottoms (the one in the front, closer to the center of the headboard) last year.

But earlier this Fall, I also got him the other pajama bottom in gingham print at Target since we kept bringing clothes to and from the lake house and would run out of pajamas or joggers. So it’s up to him whichever he decides to wear, but I picked this red hoodie to go with it.

The dogs, on the other hand, are gonna be donning their gingham bandanas. I also brought their reindeer headband and a beanie that was a gift from my SIL last year.

So the point is, Christmas prints are easy to find and match. Just decide on your theme and pick items you may already have in the closet! And if you really can’t find any matching plaid, tartan, gingham or check in each other’s closets, then one can go with a solid colored one that will match the other’s print!

Now if you’re wondering, where are the dogs’ Christmas pajamas this year? Well, there aren’t any!

BUT, I got them new Christmas hoodies that match my sweater instead! This is what we’re wearing on Christmas Eve!

I got the husband a solid-colored hoodie to match one of the colors in our sweaters instead. Obviously, he doesn’t want to wear the same print. AND I wouldn’t want him to wear one either if there was one for men’s.

There aren’t!

They are all from American Eagle Outfitters because we love our Pittsburgh businesses! Necklace made by Pittsburgh-based small business, Havana’s Heyday (c/o), made with a vintage authentic Chanel button!

Now if you’re still looking to match and need something quick, I’ve linked some PJs on Prime that will still make it before Christmas. But I also added matching PJs from Target that you can order now and pick up in store.
