Ceiling Light Without Electrical Wires

Do you have no attic space or electrical wires on your ceiling too? Then I have a trick for you!

Hello friends! Took a long break from blogging, but kept creating content on Instagram. So if you haven’t followed me on there, what are you waiting for? You’ll see more of my DIY’s and home decor on there, especially on IG REELS. So follow me, @styleanthropy, to see more of these. Now let’s get to the fun part to see the light fixture I used, how we installed it, and the resources used for this mini project!

How to Install a Ceiling Light without Electrical Wires

I received this pendant light: Manke 1-Light Single Geometric Pendant c/o Wayfair. I chose this because it has that Boho feel to it and goes with the rest of the theme at our lake house. Case in point: egg chair or how about my dream lombok bed? So I knew this light fixture would be perfect. And when it arrived, I was so happy with it!

I got it late last year, during the holidays, but only had the chance to install it this week. Take a look at the details!

Isn’t she a beaut?

I had planned in my head to install it over the dining table. But while it was sitting on top of the kitchen island before installation, I questioned my decision and wondered whether it would be more perfect as a pendant light over the island. Sure, it was a good size for it and perhaps the scale is better for that spot. The color also picks up on one of the shades of the countertop. But once the husband held it above the island and above the table to help me visualize, I realized that the light fixture matches the furniture and decor in the dining room better. So dining room it is!

But regardless where we hang the light, this old home has no attic space in most areas except in the hallway leading to the bedrooms. That means, no electrical wires. Unless we want to rip out the ceiling (which we don’t want to do right now), we weren’t going to have an electrical source for ceiling lights.

No problem!

Two Ways to Add Ceiling Light Without Electric Source in the Ceiling

There are two ways to add a ceiling light without an electric source in the ceiling.

  1. First, you can opt for a light fixture that has a long cord with a plug at the end. You can still hang it in the middle of a room, run the cord to a corner where you have an outlet and just plug it in. I might actually do this in one of our guest rooms that haven’t been finished.
  2. Second, you can use a regular ceiling light but instead of running electrical wires, stick a puck light to it. Let me show you how in the video below. Note, that this won’t work with light fixtures with exposed bulbs. You’ll understand what I mean once you watch the video.

See what I mean? How easy was that?

I used these puck lights here. It’s the same ones I used under the kitchen cabinets that you might have seen on my Instagram. It comes in a pack of 6 with 2 remotes. Haven’t changed the batteries on the first batch of puck lights I installed in the kitchen over two weeks ago. So far, so good!

Note: this light source solution is more for aesthetic and ambience. My main light source for the dining area is a long track light that we installed on the center beam of the open-concept room. We were able to run electrical on that without having to rip anything. So if you’re thinking of using the puck light trick as your main light source, the light probably won’t be enough unless you use multiple puck lights.

So there you have it. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments below.

Now, linking sources for everything you see in the dining room.
