‘90s icons giving us major fashion inspo

Ah the ‘90s. It was the era that blessed us with the internet, Justin and Britney got together, ‘The Rachel’ was the haircut and “Wannabe” was played on repeat (sorry dad). But it’s the outfits we need to talk about. From scrunchies and spaghetti straps to faded denim and chunky shoes, the ‘90s gave us countless memorable fashion moments that are just as cool now as they were the first time around. So, dial into the decade that definitely wasn’t clueless on the style front and recreate these ‘90s outfit ideas for 2021.

Famed for her effortlessly cool style and love of dainty slip dresses, Kate Moss is the ultimate ‘90s muse — and we’re still lusting after her wardrobe today. Every ‘90s girl owned a slip dress (just ask Courtney Love and Gwyneth Paltrow) but no one wore it better than Kate (well, her supermodel good looks probably helped). Keep the look pared-back with minimal accessories or toughen it up with a leather biker jacket.

It wouldn’t be a ‘90s throwback without including actress Winona Ryder. Often dressed head-to-toe in black, the undisputed queen of grunge really knew how to rock a denim mini skirt. We wanna wear this eternally cool style everywhere and anywhere, especially with an oversized jacket and chunky boots à la Winona.

Checks are big news RN, so it’s only right that we look to Clueless’s Cher Horowitz for ‘90s outfit ideas. She may have been clueless in love, but she definitely wasn’t in the fashion department. Nail her nostalgic look with a plaid mini skirt, over-the-knee boots and a fluffy cardi. A yellow bag will add a splash of colour while nodding to Cher’s iconic co-ord (you know the one). Now all we need is her computerised outfit-coordinating closet…

With all this extra sofa time, we’ve re-watched every single episode of Friends (thanks Netflix) and it’s given us some major LOLs along with some serious fashion inspo. You might argue that fashion buyer Rachel (and her much-imitated hair) is the most stylish of the gang, but we think Monica is a worthy contender. Seen in ‘The One with the Flashback’, Monica’s faded blue mom jeans and red cami combo is a look that’s so relevant for today. Could it BE anymore on-trend?

Wanna look a million bucks? Well, duh! Let Hilary Banks from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air give you a lesson in power dressing. Serving up six seasons’ worth of covetable looks, the high-maintenance fashionista is the underrated style icon of the ‘90s. Hilary once described herself as ‘a beautiful woman trapped in an even more beautiful woman’s body’, and we couldn’t agree more. Emulate her ultra-polished style with a classic LBD, a tailored jacket and chic accessories.

There’s No Doubt that cargo pants are having a major comeback, but can you guess who got there first? Pop star Gwen Stefani obvs. Channel her Hella Good style by pairing camo print trousers with a midriff-baring crop top, chunky trainers and a puffer jacket. For extra nostalgia, load up on accessories and recreate the singer’s signature space buns.
