Astoria, Queens, New York

Initially established as a fort during the War of 1812, the settlement was once known as Hallett’s Cove. They renamed it Astoria in 1839.

Primarily, to honor John Jacob Astor, the wealthiest American at the time, in hopes of securing his financial support. Astor contributed a modest $500—equivalent to roughly $17,000 today—but never set foot in the area.

Despite his minimal involvement, Astoria flourished, driven by German immigrants. Moreover, they transformed it into a hub for furniture and cabinet craftsmanship. Merged into New York City in 1898, Astoria continued as an industrial powerhouse while fostering a burgeoning art form: motion pictures.

Now, this colorful home sits proudly in Astoria, boasting its history.

The neighborhood became a focal point for silent film production, with major figures like Paramount Pictures, W.C. Fields, and the Marx Brothers filming at Kaufman Astoria Studios, a site now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
